Introduction

　　The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital was established in early 2002. It is a subspecialty under the National Key Discipline (Fostering) in General Surgery, one of the first standardized residency training bases in general surgery in China, and a Shenzhen Key Clinical Construction Discipline. The department serves as a teaching base for Shenzhen University, Guangzhou Medical University, Shantou University, Guangdong Medical University, and Anhui Medical University, training master’s students, resident physicians, and advanced trainees from various institutions across China. Over the years, the department has undertaken multiple research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the Provincial Health Bureau, and the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission.

　　Team and Expertise

　　The department has a strong technical foundation and a well-structured academic team. Under the leadership of Professor Zhang Haitao, who serves as the academic director, department chair, and chief physician, the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery has developed into a modern medical team integrating medical care, education, and research, with extensive academic influence in Guangdong Province. The department currently comprises 29 medical and nursing staff, including three professors and chief physicians, five associate professors and chief physicians, and one associate chief nurse. One staff member has received overseas training experience. The department operates 50 fixed beds and admits over 2,500 gastrointestinal patients annually.
